Welcome to the St.George Gallery

bill_4.JPG (19568 bytes)     As a child growing up in Brockton, William St. George was enraptured with horses.
Each week he saved the money he earned delivering The Enterprise so he could spend it on riding lessons he took in Avon.
St. George has incorporated that early love of horses into his art. As a painter who specializes in oil on canvas, St. George recently opened a new gallery on Boston's Newbury Street.
Several of the paintings on the gallery walls incorporate horses, much to the delight of its younger visitors. On a recent morning, gallery associate Christine Dorvel helped a young girl find all the horses hidden in one of the paintings.
St. George said his appreciation of horses is reflected in his work.
"They're beautiful animals," he said. "I think it's important to love what you paint."
For more than two decades, St. George painted in a studio in the Steinert Building on Boylston Street. He opened the gallery in November. The new location in the famous shopping district offers St. George a chance to catch the fancy of passers-by.
St. George, who lives in Walpole, said the new location is conducive to walk-up business.
"It's a great location," he said.
In addition to all the area folks who browse along the street on a regular basis, conventions bring in people from out of town, he said.
Although he now makes his living as a painter, it wasn't always that way.
Most of his professional life has been dedicated to the advertising design world. It wasn't until computers began to take over the industry that he decided to get out.
"I thought the learning curve was too great," he said of tackling a new way of creating art in the advertising world. "Plus, I wanted to paint."
So he quit about six years ago to devote himself full time to painting. Obviously a good decision, the St. George Gallery recently boasted paintings that varied in price from $1,200 to $8,000. Limited edition prints of some of the works are also available.
St. George concentrates on landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes. In addition to his Boston-based paintings, travels to different parts of the world have made good subjects for other paintings.
In June 1999, St. George traveled to France and worked in the same spot where Vincent Van Gogh painted his famous olive grove scene.
"It just shakes you up," St. George said of his travels. By experiencing new languages and cultures, his painting benefits, he said.
When he's not in an exotic locale, St. George can be found on Newbury Street, painting whatever strikes him. The recent warm weather has driven him from the studio into the great outdoors.
"I like the energy of the city, being out and about," he said.
Being outside also forces him to be efficient with his work. The ever-changing natural light forces him to work quickly.
And, "it's a good way to meet people," he said.
"I feel art should be a part of everybody's life and not be limited to museums."
To prove his point, gallery visitors will sometimes be able to catch St. George working on a painting in the gallery.
    The St. George Gallery at 245 Newbury Street is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Call 617-450-0321 for more information.
