Walpole resident teaches the art of fearless painting

By Veronica Hamlett, Wicked Local Walpole, Posted Oct 14, 2011 @ 05:22 PM, Print Comment, WALPOLE

Some artists prefer to carefully sketch with pencil on their blank canvases before ever touching a paintbrush.

William St. George works just the opposite. On Saturday, he’ll encourage Walpole painters to paint with the same kind of fearlessness.

“Don’t be afraid of the canvas, and no self criticism. That’s my own approach to it from my own experience,” he said. “I wish there had been somebody teaching me way back then to not be afraid. You can just go for it.”

St. George will be leading a one-day workshop, “Painting Outside the Lines,” hosted by the Recreation Department. Painters of all skill levels are encouraged to come and learn tricks of the trade acquired throughout St. George’s 45-year career.

St. George began his career in graphic design and advertising production but took painting classes from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts as often as he could. In 1991, St. George took the plunge and opened up his own gallery in downtown Boston, becoming a full-time painter.

“All the time I was in advertising, I still painted,” he said. “I didn’t want to wait for the day I’d be able to retire and then paint.”

St. George describes his work as a combination between realism and impressionism. He works primarily with oils and acrylics, and his subjects include the city of Boston itself. Often he’ll recreate a photo from a newspaper or magazine.

Horses are also a regular subject of his paintings, stemming from a childhood spent riding. St. George was named artist of the year in 2005 by an international horse show in California. His work was also featured in an exhibit organized by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino to mark the city’s 375th birthday the same year.

Currently, Walpole Community Television airs “Impressions” every Friday at 8 p.m., St. George’s own instructional painting show.

St. George said he likes to make an emotional connection with the viewer through his painting.

“Life, happiness, joy – let the other artists depress you,” he joked. “I’m not a narrative painter. The mood I like to create is an elevated one.”

“The ones that grab me have an emotional connection,” he said. “It has to click at a visceral level.”

St. George still takes painting classes as often as he hosts them in his Boylston Street gallery/studio. He takes his work outdoors several times a week and is currently working on a painting of downtown Walpole. One corner of his gallery is devoted to his students’ work, as well.

“I like to get outside lately to paint and connect with people,” he said. “I like the energy of painting with other people.”

St. George can spend anywhere from a few hours to several weeks working on a painting. Many times he’ll start with a sketch on paper but never hesitates when putting paint on the canvas.

Painting is best learned by doing, not watching, St. George says, and Saturday’s workshop will be no exception. The class will start with small warm up exercises and sketching assignments, but the goal is to get painting as quickly as possible. St. George encourages his students to let go of their inhibitions or hang-ups and simply create.

“The more open-minded you can be, the easier it is,” he said. “This will be a flexible class with everyone supportive of one another.”

Paintings of Artist William St.George
Featured in Hollywood Film
Starring Matthew McConaughey and Michael Douglas

BOSTON, MA – “The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” is a romantic comedy being filmed in Boston and starring Matthew McConaughey as an infamous bachelor who goes to his younger brother’s wedding and is haunted by the girlfriends of his past.

In one scene shot at the upscale Saint Club on Exeter Street, Connor (played by McConaughey) is getting sage advice from Uncle Wayne (played by Michael Douglas) on picking up women.  Behind them as they sit and talk about the finer points of philandering are two paintings by Boston artist William St. George.

Upon visiting the St. George Gallery at 162 Boylston Street, the set designer for the Mark Waters’s directed film selected two contemporary paintings by Mr. St.George.  One, entitled “Reverie,” is a portrait of a young woman in a meditative mood.  The other is an award-winning painting of one of the famous Lippizzaner stallions.

In addition to portraits and paintings of horses, Mr. St.George is well known for his abstracts, florals, artwork of swimmers, and scenes of Back Bay and Provence.  For additional information please call 617-338-0200, or visit www.stgeorgegallery.com.

As you may already know, the Grand National Rodeo, Horse and Stock Show is one of the largest and most prestigious shows in the world and it attracts people from all over the globe.  Every day for nine (9) days between 8,000 and 11,000 people per day come to the Grand National Rodeo, Horse and Stock Show and your artwork will be prominently on display for all of them to see.  The fact that this is a juried show draws even more attention.

The display is tastefully designed on a western theme and is conveniently located adjacent to the very popular wine tasting exhibit.  The location is excellent.  This display is very visible to the guests who visit the show arena, the stables, the food vendors, or the exhibiting areas.

By appointment, artists are welcome to paint or sculpt on site and meet and greet the public.  This is a very popular feature with prospective buyers and it’s a great aid for selling.  We will be doing this during our meet and greet segment of the show and possibly on alternate days, also.  We are limited for both space and time for this so please make your reservation to do on site work early
