ROWLEY NEWS
ARTIST WILLIAM ST. GEORGE’S
WORKS IN ROWLEY

You can almost smell the horses in the oil paintings by William St. George.  You can almost hear them snort and chomp and whinny.  With thick strokes of luscious colors the artist has brought to life not only the horses but the whole atmosphere in which they move.  You can see sunlight and water glinting and almost hear the wind.   The outsized horse canvas that hangs in the window of Linden Gallery and Frame in Rowley is big as life. That painting is one selection of St. George works on display at the gallery located in Rowley Plaza off Route One.

The exhibit features abstracts and landscapes along with the horse paintings.  Gallery owner Carl Bouthot said he was thrilled at the chance to display St. George’s work..  “I was very excited about getting these paintings.  They’re so bold and vibrant,” Bouthot said.  “It’s been great for the gallery.”

Rowley is a long way from the fashionable and artsy Newbury Street in Boston, where St. George owns a gallery.   He said he has known Bouthot for several years and was happy to have him show some of the paintings.

St. George has won numerous awards for his works, which include not only oil paintings, but watercolors and prints, and is listed in Who’s Who in American Art.

The artist has been living and working in the Boston area for years.  He made the transition from graphic designer to fulltime painter in 1991, and moved into the Newbury Street space.  For more that 10 years he’s been doing the cable television show, “Impressions”, in which he takes viewers to places where he likes to paint – could be Newport or Maine or a Boston street corner – so they can learn about the process of painting on location.

St. George paints with speed, a skill he says he learned by painting outdoors, where artist must work quickly to capture the scene as it shifts or changes.

“I try to capture the atmosphere.  It’s not just painting an isolated horse in a picture,” he said.

St. George paints all sort of subjects, but especially loves horses.

“I rode as a kid, and I had a love for these animals,” he said.  In fourth and fifth grade he would fill sketch books with horses, especially rodeo horses.  As an adult artist, he returned to this subject

“You have to know what a horse is, not just anatomically, but you have a feeling for a horse, the spirit of them,” he said.

St. George is also known for his pictures of swimmers.  “I swim and I love water,” he said.  Swimmers and horses have much in common, he added.  “There’s power in both.  There’s power in water and power in these animals.”

Beside the oil paintings at the Linden Gallery, St. George is offering limited edition prints of some of his paintings.  He creates these prints by the Giclee process, which combines state-of-the-art technology with centuries old printmaking tradition to create high quality reproductions.  Bouthot said people who may not be able to afford a St. George painting might still enjoy the artist’s work with these prints.

The exhibit will run for several months.  Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday until 7 p.m.  For information, call Carl Bouthot at 978-948-2105.
